What is a Shadow?

Good Morning!

With groundhog day being tomorrow we focused on groundhogs and shadows today for storytime.  After going through our welcome song and the ABC's, we did a new fingerplay called OPEN, SHUT THEM and then I introduced shadows to the kids and we talked about what GroundHog Day was.

I shared part of a book called The Groundhog Day Book of Facts and Fun by Wendie Old.  The first part of this book explains what happens in Pennsylvania every year and what it means if the groundhop see his shadow or not.  I brought in a big light and was going to try to teach them how to make shadow puppets on the wall but couldn't get it dark enough.  We tried to make them anyway so they could go home and try them.

We read the book:  Shadows by Deanna Calvert and My Shadow by Robert Louis Stevenson and finished up with reading Double Trouble Groundhog Day by Bethany Roberts.  I also shared a flannel story of the five little groundhogs.

We closed by doing a fingerplay called It is BIG, and sang "If your happy and you know it again".

Craft today was some simple coloring pages.  I gave them their choice, one was a ground hog with a shadow and one without.  They were to choose the one they wanted to have happen tomorrow.  More winter or spring.

Thanks for participating.  Thanks to the Mom's for all their help.  Here are pictures of this weeks storytime.
