MANNERS

We got a new book in the library that I wanted to share with the kids so this weeks story time was based around it.  The book is called: "Watch You Tongue, Cecily Beasley" by Lane Fredrickson.  Its about a rude girl who sticks out her tongue and it gets stuck.  I also read:  The Thingumajig Book of Manners by Keller; Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems; and May I Please Have a Cookie? by Jennifer Morris.

Activities played:  We played Simon says with the kids but they were only supposed to do the action if you said "Simon says please . . .   It was a lot of fun with the kids.  I taught them how to do a few of the polite words in Spanish like please, thank you, your welcome, etc.

Craft time was very simple today.  We did a color sheet that I found on line.  Here are some of the kids.

Thanks to everyone for your participation.  Storytime wouldn't be the same without you!  Chris

TALK LIKE A PIRATE

Today is international Talk Like A Pirate Day! RRRRR!

In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day we read some Pirate Books today.  My favorite was "Shiver Me Letters, A Pirate ABC" by June Sobel.  Then we read "Port Side Pirates" by Debbie Harter.

Activity:  We played "Pin the Parrot on the Pirate".  I blindfolded kids and let them see if they could get the parrot on the pirate.  We had parrots all over the place.  This took a while so we didn't read another story today.

I tried to sing "I'm a Pirate" with the kids.  It wasn't one that they knew so they were only able to help me in parts, then we did our craft.

Todays craft was fairly simple.  We made hats out of newspaper.  I had the kids spread out on the floor with a piece of newspaper and I showed them how to fold and make the hats.  Here are some pictures of the kids.

Great job everyone.  Thank you for coming!  Until next time.

ALLIGATOR, ALLIGATOR . . .

Storytime was all about alligators today.  I shared a book called Baby ALLIGATOR by Ginjer L. Clarke with the kids.  It went through the life of an alligator.

Other books read were:
There's an alligator under my bed by Mercer Mayer
Duck and Cover by Jackie Urbanovic

I had a bunch of games found on line so we played a few  with the kids.  We had a strip puzzle they put together to form an alligator.   Two swamps to place the matching alligator in the right one, based off of A or a.  We did the "5 little Monkeys, teasing Mr. Alligator.  and we did an echo song called "Alligator".

Craft time:
Gave the kids cut out shapes and the letter "A" to color and glue to make an alligator.  Here are the some of the kids.  They did AWESOME!

Great job Kids!  Can you guess what next weeks topic is going to be?  Sept. 19 is ___________________________________ Day.

ABC'S

We had a lot of fun with the alphabet in storytime today.

We read the following books:
A is for Salad by Mike Lester
Alpha Oops, The Day Z went First! by Alethea Kontis

Both of these stories had the alphabet a little mixed up.  We sang the ABC song a few times, we tried to do it backward once.  It is harder to do than you would think.

We played two games.  "When I was at the store, I bought an . . . A  (apple) B etc.  You have everyone one take a turn naming something they bought at the store following the alphabet.  Then we played ABC Turtle.  I found this idea on www.maketaketeach.com.  It is kind of like bingo.  I had the kids take turns picking a letter and then finding where it went on the board.

For the craft today, I had them make ABC Chains.  I printed and cut into strips on different colored paper, A through F.  Too many kids to do more than this.  Then the kids taped the strips together alphabetically to make their chains.

Here are pictures of todays project.

Thanks to everyone for participating.  See ya next week.

MOONS AND STARS

I couldn't seem to get away from our summer theme for this storytime.  I had some books I have been wanting to share with the kids that we didn't use during the summer so thats what we read today.

We introduced Wally and Wendy the Weather Bears.  I hope to utilize them throughout the year.  Today Wally was wearing a raincoat due to the weather outside.

Stories Read:
Kitten's Fist Full Moon by Kevin Henkes
Papa, please get the moon for me by Eric Carle
The Sun is My Favorite Star by Frank Asch
Stars by Ray Frazee

Action Rhyme and Flannel Boards:
"Moon Ride"
Do you want to go up with me to the moon? (point up)
Let's get in our rocket ship and blast off soon! (climb in, seat belt, blast off!)
Faster and faster we reach to the sky (jump and reach)
Isn't it fun to be able to fly? (hands out)
We're on the moon, now all take a look (look around)
Sit back down, and I'll read you a book.  (sit down)

"Bend and Stretch"
Bend and stretch, reach for the stars
There goes Jupiter, here comes Mars
Bend and stretch and reach for the sky
Stand on tip-e-toe, oh so high!

"Four Little Stars"
Four little stars winking at me.
One shot off and then there were 3!
Three little stars with nothing to do,
One shot off, and then there were 2!
Two little stars afraid of the sun,
One shot off, and then there was 1!
One little star alone is no fun,
It shot off, and then there was none!

"Row, Row, Row Your Boat"
Row, row, row your boat,
Gently down the stream,
If you see an alligator
Don't forget to scream. (SCREAM!)
(Use other animals and there sounds for other verses)

(Found these ideas online.  I did not note down the sites I found them on but I want to thank them for there creativity and willingness to share ideas. Thanks)

Craft:
I had the kids make star magnets today.  I had foam stars that I let them decorate them place a magnet on the back.  Here are a few pictures of the crafts.

Join us next week for some more fun.  Thanks for coming!

SUMMER READ!

We are getting towards the end of our summer reading for this summer.  Today at the library we had Marin Colby do a segment on "wishes".  Saturday we had a mini carnival here at the library, and next Wed. we are looking at having Max the Magician!

We have had a lot of fun this summer here at the library and I hope everyone has enjoyed it!  Here are some images of the last few events.
